November 23 2005 TbimRecordNewswm TODAY All-female Oh so sweet barbershop quartet a cut above the rest CONTACT US Welcome to our daily Community Page This page regularly features all of the tidbits you see as well as stories about you our community We'd like to hear from you If you have a suggestion for a story or would like to comment on anything on this page just contact Deanna Watson Managing Editor for Content at (940) 763-7532 or 1-800-627-1646 Ext 532 or watsond GTimesRecordNewscom HEALTH TIPS BY DR GOTT Linda Stewart For the Times Record News VERNON (Special) A sweet new music is filling the air here since the formation of a local all female barbershop group The group's ultimate goal is to be associated with Sweet Adelines International which has a worldwide membership of some 30000 women The organization promotes educating its members to sing four-part harmony in a barbershop style Lori Woods organized the local group Woods said she first became Interested in the group when die saw an ad for voice lessons in the newspaper while living in Sherman Texas in 1998 She said the lessons were being offered through a group called the Red River Valley Chorus a barbershop style group She said she was completely amazed when she heard the group sing She auditioned was accepted and sang with the group for over three years Woods said that it was her husband Steve's suggestion that she might start a similar group hoe She said that barbershop type harmony has four voice parts lead baritone tenor and bass Woods said that the group is open to all groups before Martin said she has been involved with groups in both Amarillo Texas and El Paso Texas Shogren participated in Sweet Adeline groups while living in Forrest Lake Minn and Rapid City SD The three are very excited about the formation of a Sweet Adeline chorus here Woods said that the closest all woman barbershop chorus in the area is in Lawton Okla Angela England has taken over the reins as chorus director She has a degree in vocal music education and has been a part of several musical productions is great tuid we are having a lot of she said Woods said that right now the group is meeting on a week-to-week basis and trying to learn songs for possible Christmas programs The group meets each Monday evening from 7 to 9 pm in the Chapel at Wilbarger St Church of Christ located at 2515 Wilbarger St Woods said that on Monday Nov 21 the group is planning a special guest night Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to attend For more information contact Woods at (940) 8396328 or Carla Dye at (940)8393715 Linda StewartFor the Times Record News Chorus director Angela England rehearses with Nikki Baker Whitney Kendrick and Alec la Matthews The allfemale barbershop style singing group has a worldwide membership of 30000 EASIER More hurtful to DEAR DR GOTT: I am 43 years old and about 25 pounds overweight I have a varicose vein that starts at the groin area and travels down my thigh ending behind my calf I have seen a cardiovascular surgeon for this and he wants to do surgery so there any more back flow in the vein Of course there are the risks of infection and phlebitis What would happen in the future if I didn't have the surgery since it doesn't bother me now?
